PSG-OM: Time to play Beckham?

David Beckham is expected to be part of the group that will face Marseille on Sunday.

Carlo Ancelotti made a promise ahead of the trip to Sochaux. « He'll be ready next week, for Marseille. » Who? David Beckham of course! The one and only David Beckham. The one who focuses the press' attention whether he's training or not, whether he's in his car or not and even if he's wearing PSG's suit. And the Marseille game, THE big Ligue 1 clash, is coming quickly. The superstar will thus be ready. But ready how? Ready to start? Ready to play?

If you ask Elie Baup, l'OM's coach, « he will start one of those games » in the championship on Sunday or in the French Cup on Wednesday. Antoine Kombouaré, who was replaced by Antonetti, thinks « he'll play in the Cup game. » But a big question mark still clouds the former England skipper's fitness, on top of his usefulness for the squad. According to Eric Di Meco, a former French international turned consultant for RMC, « in a tough game like that, he'll either get crushed or have a bad game because he doesn't look fit. »

Convincing in training

As he showed during training, Beckham remains, at 37, a talented player. He's quick to react and doesn't rest at all when it comes to winning the ball back. During a seven-a-side this week, the former Man U star showed promises and looks ready to fit into the locker room. Enough to get the nod in the starting eleven on Sunday? After the defeat in Sochaux, probably not.

How the game evolves will most likely change things for Ancelotti. The PSG-OM are tough games, difficult to win with quite the physical contest between both teams. The Italian coach will not want to risk breaking his new toy. Even if his legendary right footed kick could be precious in case of a close sided game. Anything is possible.

One thing is certain, everyone in the Parc des Princes would love to see Beckham play. If only to focus on the football instead of analysing every single of the star's movements in Paris.
